Notary Seal Requirements By State
Below is the notary seal requirements for each state as stated on American Notary Society, National Notary Association and individual state notary web sites.

Alabama
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Alabama requires each notary public to use an embossing seal as their official notary seal.
The wording at the bottom outside of the circle can either say "Alabama State at Large" or "(county name) County, Ala."
For the authentication of their official acts, each notary public must provide an official notary seal of office which must present, by its impression, their name, office and the state for which they were appointed.

Alaska
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Alaska requires each notary public to use an ink stamp or embossing seal. Seal impression must be photographically reproducible. Embossed
seal impressions that are not photographically reproducible may be used in addition to, but not instead of, an ink stamp impression.
The notary seal must contain the notary public's name as printed on the commission certificate, the words "Notary Public" and "State of Alaska". The seal may be circular, not over two inches in diameter, or rectangle, no more than one inch in height and two and one-half inches wide.

Arizona
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Arizona requires each notary to use a rectangular rubber ink stamp (no larger than 1 1/2 inches high and 2 1/2 inches wide) as their official seal. An embossing seal may be used but only in conjuction with the ink stamp.
The imprint of the notary seal on notarized documents must be made in dark ink, as required by Arizona law, and photographically reproducible.
The notary seal must contain the words "Notary Public", the county in which they are commissioned, their name exactly as it appears on their notarial application which must match the name on their commission certificate, the expiration date of their commission and the Great Seal of Arizona.

Arkansas
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Arkansas requires each notary public the use of a rectangular or circular rubber stamp that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal.
The seal must include the notary public's name as written in their official signature, the name of the county where the bond is filed, the words "Notary Public and "Arkansas", the date of the notary's commission expiration and the commission number.
The notary seal can not include the Grat Seal of Arkansas or an outline of the State of Arkansas.

California
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of California requires each notary to use a rubber stamp as their official seal. However, an embossing seal may be used in conjuction with the ink stamp. The seal impression must be photographically reproducible.
The notary seal must contain the State Seal of California, the words "Notary Public", the name of the Notary Public as shown on their commission, the name of the county where their oath of office and Notary Public bond are on file, the expiration date of the Notary Public's commission, the sequential identification number (commission number) assigned to the Notary Public, and the identification number assigned to the seal manufacturer.
Rectangle notary seals must be no larger than one inch in width by two and one-half inches in length with a serrated or milled edge border.

Colorado
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Colorado requires each notary public the use of either a black ink rubber stamp or an embosser that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal. The size or shape is not specified.
The notary seal must contain the notary public's name exactly as it appears on their commission, the words "Notary Public" and "State of Colorado" within the outline of a seal.
The notary rubber stamp or embosser should be used with a stamp that reads "My Commission Expires (date)." If the commission expiration date is on the stamp, it must be placed outside the outline of the seal.

Connecticut
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Connecticut does not require the use of a notary stamp or embossing seal.
If used, the notary seal must include the notary's name as it appears on their "Certificate of Appointment", the words "Notary Public" and "Connecticut".
State law does give the notary the option of having the words "My Commission Expires (insert date)" on the seal. However, most find it is more practical to have thie commission expiration date appear on a separate rubber stamp along with thir name and title of notary public.

Delaware
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Delaware allows each notary public the use of either a black inked rubber stamp or an embosser that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal.
The notary seal must contain the notary public's name exactly as it appears on their commission, and must contain the words "My Commission expires on (insert date)" and the words "Notary Public" and "State of Delaware".

District of Columbia
Notary Seal Requirements:
The District of Columbia requires the use of an embossing seal to complete all official notarial acts.
The notary seal must contain the name of the Notary Public as it appears on their commission, the words "Notary Public" in the center of the seal, and "District of Columbia" on the perimeter.

Florida
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Florida requires the use of a black-ink rubber stamp. The notary stamp can be circular or rectangular, but must be photographically reproducible. An embossing seal may only be just in conjuction with the official notary ink stamp.
The notary seal must include the words "Notary Public - State of Florida", the name of the notary public, the date of the expiration of the commission of the notary public, and the commission number.
The Great Seal of the State of Florida is prohibited from use on official notary public seals.

Georgia
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Georgia requires each notary public the use of either a rubber stamp or an embosser that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal. There is no size or shape specified.
Each Notary must provide a seal of office for the authentication of notarial acts. Such seal shall have the Notary's name and the words "Notary Public ________ County Georgia."
The notary seal may also contain the commission expiration date.

Hawaii
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Hawaii requires each notary public to use a circular ink stamp or embossing seal, not over two inches in diameter with a serrated or milled-edge border. Notaries may only have either a stamp or a seal -- not both.
The notary stamp/seal should include the notary's name, the words "Notary Public" and "State of Hawaii" and contain the notary's commission number.

Idaho
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Idaho requires each notary public to use a rubber stamp with a serrated or milled edge border as their official notary seal.
The official seal must include the words "Notary Public", the notary public's name and the words "State of Idaho".
Idaho does not allow any other information, text, and/or graphics to be used on the notary seal. The notary seal may be of rectangular or circular form.

Illinois
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Illinois requires each notary public to use a rectangular black-inked rubber stamp (no larger than 1" x 2 1/2") with a serrated or milled edge border as their official notary seal.
The rubber stamp seal should contain the words "Official Seal", the notary's official name, the words "Notary Public, "State of Illinois" and "My Commission Expires" (followed by date).

Indiana
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Indiana allows the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal which is photographically reproducible.
The notary seal must contain the words "Notary Public," "State of Indiana" and "Seal".

Iowa
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Idaho allows the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal.
The stamp or seal must include the words "Notarial Seal" and "Iowa", the notary public's name as it appears on the commission certificate, the words "Commission Number" followed by the commission number, and the words "My Commission Expires" followed by the date or a blank line to write in the date.

Kansas
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Kansas requires each notary public to use either a rubber stamp or embossing seal. The seal impression must be photographically reproducible.
Each notary seal should contain the notary public's name as it appears on the notary application, the words "Notary Public" and "State of Kansas".

Kentucky
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Kentucky does not require the use of a notary stamp or seal.
If one is used, the notary stamp or embossing seal could contain the name of the notary public, the words "Notary Public", "State at Large", "Kentucky" and "My Commission Expires (insert date)".

Louisiana
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Louisiana considers the notary signature as the notarial seal. ASN recommends the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal.

Maine
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Maine does not require the use of a notary stamp or embossing seal. Using an embossing or ink seal does not eliminate the other requirements for a proper notarization required by Maine law.
If a stamp or seal is used, it must contain the notary public's name as it appears on the "Certificate of Office", the words "Notary Public" and either "Maine" or "ME" or the Great Seal of the State of Maine. The Secretary of State recommends the use of the words rather than the Great Seal.

Maryland
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Maryland requires the use of an embossing seal or rubber stamp.
The notary stamp/seal must contain the name of the notary public as it appears on the notary's commission, the words "Notary Public" and the County (or City of Baltimore) for which the notary was appointed.
The notary seal may also contain a symbol or device chosen by the Notary Public.

Massachusetts
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Massachusetts allows each notary public the use of either a black ink rubber stamp or an embosser that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal.
The notary seal must contain the notary's name exactly as it appears on their commission, the words "Notary Public", "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" or "Massachusetts", "My commission expires on ____ (date)", and a facsimile of the Great Seal of Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Michigan
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Michigan does not require the use of a notary seal. However, if a stamp/seal is used, the impression must be photographically reproducible.
The official seal should contain the notary's name exactly as it appears on their "Certificate of Appointment", the words "Notary Public, State of Michigan, County of _____ (name of county)", "My commission expires _____ (date)", and "Acting in the County of _____ (county where notarial act performed)".

Minnesota
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Minnesota requires each notary public to use a rectangular rubber stamp that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal, although an embossing seal may be used in addition, but not in place of the rubber stamp notary seal.
The seal must be rectangular and must not exceed three quarters of an inch by two and a half inches.
The seal must contain the name of the notary public, the words "Notary Public", the Minnesota state seal and the words "My Commission Expires" followed by the expiration date.

Mississippi
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Mississippi requires each notary public to use a circular rubber stamp that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal, although an embossing seal may be used in addition, but not in place of the rubber stamp notary seal.
The seal should contain a border and be no less that 1 1/2 inches and no larger than 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
The notary seal must include the notary's name as it is written on the commission, the identification number of the notary's commission, the words "Notary Public and "State of Mississippi (insert county of residence) County" and "Comission Expires (insert date)".

Missouri
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Missouri requires each notary public to use either a black-inked rubber stamp or embossing seal that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal.
The print on the stamp/seal must be in type no smaller than eightpoint type.
The stamp/seal must contain the notary's exact name as it appears on their commission certificate, the assigned commission number and the phrases "Notary Seal", "Notary Public" and "State of Missouri".
In addition, if using a rubber stamp, the seal must contain the county for which the notary public is commissioned and the expiration date of that commission.
The Great Seal of the State of Missouri can not be used on the Notary Stamp.

Montana
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Montana requires notary publics to use a rectangle stamp, approximately 1” x 2 ½” in size, as their official notary seal. The stamp may be either blue or black ink only.
The stamp must include a seal, the notary’s printed name, the phrases “Notary Public for the State of Montana” and “Residing at” with the name of the city or town where the notary lives and the notary’s commission expiration date, shown as mm/dd/yyyy.

Nebraska
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Nebraska requires each notary public to use a rectangular rubber stamp, up to 1/2" height and 2" wide. The seal must be photographically reproducable.
The notary seal should include the notary's name, date of commission expiration and the words "State of Nebraska, General Notary" OR "State of Nebraska, General Notarial".
The outline image of the State of Nebraska is popular with Nebraska Notaries.

Nevada
Notary Seal Requirements:
In the State of Nevada, the official seal of a Notary Public must be an ink rubber stamp with an imprint using indelible and photographically reproducible ink.
The shape of the rubber stamp must be rectangular, no larger than 1" x 2 1/2". A border around the seal is optional.
The notary must include the Notary's name, the words "Notary Public, State of Nevada", the appointment expiration date, and the number on the notary's "Certificate of Appointment".

New Hampshire
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of New Hampshire requires each notary public to use an ink stamp or an embossing seal.
An official embossing seal must have the notary's name and the words "Notary Public" and "New Hampshire".
If the notary uses an official seal, the notary must use a separate rubber stamp that contains the expiration date of the notary public.
An official rubber stamp must have the notary's name, the words "Notary Public" and "New Hampshire" and the expiration date of the commission.

New Jersey
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of New Jersey does not require the use of a notary stamp or embossing seal.
The "New Jersey Notary Public Manual" requires notaries to sign, date and stamp their notarial certificates. The stamp should include the date on which the notary's commission expires, their name and the words "Notary Public".

New Mexico
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of New Mexico allows each notary public the use of either a rectangular rubber stamp or an embosser that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal.
The notary rubber stamp must include the words “Official Seal”, the name of the Notary, the words “Notary Public – State of New Mexico”, “My Commission Expires _____ (date)”, and the New Mexico state seal.

New York
Notary Seal Requirements:
Although the use of a stamp/seal is not required by New York law, ASN recommends that New York notaries use an ink stamp for all notarial acts.
According to New York law, notaries are require to print, typewrite or stamp the following information beneath their signature whether or not a seal is used: notary's name, the phrase "Notary Public State of New York", name of county where notary qualified for commission, commission expiration date, and their official character numbers (if required).

North Carolina
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of North Carolina requires the use of a rubber stamp or an embossing seal that is photographically reproducible. The seal may be either circular (no more than 2 1/2" in diameter) or rectangular (1" x 2 1/2").
The notary seal must include the name of the notary exactly as it appears on their commission, the words "Notary Public", the name of the county in which the notary is commissioned including the word "County" or "Co.", and "North Carolina" or "NC".
The perimeter of the seal must contain a border that is visible when impressed, must not include any other graphics, and can optionally include the commission expiration date.

North Dakota
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of North Dakota requires the use of a rubber stamp or an embossing seal.
The notary seal must be designed to leave a clear impression, be photographically reproducible, include the words "Notary Public" and "State of North Dakota" and contain the name and commission expiration date of the notary public exactly as shown on the notary's commission or certificate of authorization.
The notary seal may not contain any other words, numbers, symbols, or a reproduction of the Great Seal of the State of North Dakota.

Ohio
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Ohio allows the use of a round rubber stamp or a circular embosser as an official notary seal.
The notary seal must contain the coat of arms of Ohio, the notary's name as it appears on their commission and the words "Notary Public" or "Notarial Seal" and "State of Ohio."

Oklahoma
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Oklahoma requires the use of a rubber stamp or embossing seal.
All notary seals should contain the name of the notary public and the words "State of Oklahoma" and "Notary Public". The expiration date and commission number may be part of the stamp or seal.

Oregon
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Oregon requires each notary public to use a rectangular rubber stamp as their official notary seal, although an embosser may be used in addition, but not in place of the rubber stamp notary seal.
The dimensions of the rectangle stamp must not exceed 3/4" x 2 3/8".
The notary seal must contain the Oregon state seal located in the upper left corner, and the following words "OFFICIAL SEAL", NAME OF NOTARY (in Bold), "NOTARY PUBLIC - OREGON", "COMMISSION NO." (followed by the commission number), and "MY COMMISSION EXPIRES" (immediately followed by the Notary's commission expiration).

Pennsylvania
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Pennsylvania requires each notary public to use a rectangular rubber stamp as their official notary seal, although an embosser may be used in addition, but not in place of the rubber stamp notary seal. The stamp should hbe no more than 1" x 3 1/2" with a plain border.
The notary stamp must contain (in order) the words "Notarial Seal", the name of the notary public, the words "Notary Public", the name of the municipality (not the political sub-division) and the county in which the notary maintains an office and the date the notary's comission expires.

Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Rhode Island does not require the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal.

South Carolina
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of South Carolina allows the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal. There is no shape or size specifications.
The seal/stamp must have the notary's name, title and state. The expiration may be included but it is optional.

South Dakota
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of South Dakota allows the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal.
Each notary seal must contain the notary's name, the words "South Dakota" and "Notary Public" and a border surrounding the imprint. In addition, rubber stamps seals should have the word "Seal".

Tennessee
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Tennessee requires each notary public to use a round ink stamp as their official notary seal. The round ink stamp must contain colored ink that is NOT black or yellow and the seal impression must be photographically reproducible.
The notary seal should contain the notary public's official name as it appears on the commission printed at the top, the county of election printed at the bottom and the words "State of Tennessee Notary Public" or "Tennessee Notary Public" printed in the center.

Texas
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Texas allows the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal that is photographically reproducible.
The seal may be circular (no more than 2" in diameter) or rectangular (1" x 2 1/2") and must have a serrated or milled-edge border.
The notary seal must include the words "Notary Public, State of Texas" around a star of five points, the notary public's name and the date the notary public's commission expires.

Utah
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Utah requires each notary public to use a ink stamp. The stamp must be rectangular (no larger than one inch by two and one-half inches), contain purple ink and must be photgraphically reproducible. An embossing seal may be used in addition to, but not in place of, the phographically reproducible seal.
The notary seal must contain the notary public's name as printed on the notary's commission, the words "Notary Public," "State of Utah," and "My Commission expires on (expiration date)", the Notary's commission number as indicated on the commission and the Great Seal of the state.

Vermont
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Vermont does not require the use of a notary stamp or embossing seal.
Virginia
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Virginia allows the use of an ink stamp or embossing seal that is photographically reproducible.
The notary seal must contain the notary public's name as it appears on the notary's commission, words "Notary Public" and "Commonwealth of Virginia".

Washington
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Washington allows each notary public the use of either a black inked rubber stamp or an engraved embosser seal that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal. The print on the seal must be in a type not smaller than eight point type.
To be legally recognized, the notary seal must contain the words "Notary Public", "State of Washington", the Notary's name (surname and at least the initials of the first and middle names), and the Notary's appointment expiration date.
Reproduction of the Washington state seal with the notary stamp or embosser is prohibited.

West Virginia
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of West Virginia allows the use of a rectangular rubber stamp no larger than 1" x 2 1/2" with a serrated or milled-edge border. The seal impression must be photographically reproducible.
The stamp must contain the notary public's official name, business or residence address and include the words "Official Seal", "Notary Public", "State of West Virginia" and "My Commission Expires (insert date)".
An embossing seal engraved with the notary public's name, and the words "Notary Seal" and "State of West Virginia" may be used in conjuction with the ink stamp.

Wisconsin
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Wisconsin allows each notary public the use of either an inked rubber stamp or an engraved embosser seal that is photographically reproducible as their official notary seal.
The impression of the notary seal must state only the following: "Notary Public", "State of Wisconsin", and the name of the Notary Public. Notary publics may use initials or a shortened firt name, but they must use their current last name in full.
No extra words or graphics may appear on the notary seal.

Wyoming
Notary Seal Requirements:
The State of Wyoming allows the use of a circular (not over 2" in diameter) or a rectangular (not more than 3/4" x 2 1/2") stamp or seal with a serrated or milled edge border.
The stamp/seal shall contain the notary's name, the words "Notary Public," the name of the county in which the notary resides and the word "Wyoming".
